Florenci Fruits – Battery installation in Spain

Modular Battery Systems (MBS) installed its first modular battery system in Spain at Florenci Fruits. The battery system was fully assembled at our facility in Hardinxveld-Giessendam and then transported to Catalonia. With this solution, the company now benefits from a stable, reliable and future-proof energy supply.

The challenge

Florenci Fruits, a progressive family business in Sant Pere Pescador, grows, sorts and processes apples. The company has significant energy demands— from cooling installations to processing lines — and is heavily dependent on a stable energy supply.

But it was precisely that stability that was lacking.

The company was connected to a communal transformer, along with several other companies in the area. Every expansion in the region further reduced the voltage,  placing increasing pressure on the local grid infrastructure.When Florenci Fruits switched to solar energy, the challenge grew: in full sunlight, the company generated more than enough power, but as soon as clouds appeared, voltage levels dropped abruptly.

The result:

  • Machines came to a standstill
  • Compressors switched off
  • Production processes had to be restarted repeatedly

The switch to solar energy therefore did not bring the freedom that Florenci Fruits had expected, but rather disruption and downtime. A structural solution was required to ensure operational certainty— regardless of the weather or the load on the grid.

Given the higher risk of power outages in Spain compared to Northern Europe and fruit cooling is an extremely sensitive process, we also immediately addressed that risk. The system can operate completely off-grid and is equipped with a 400 kVA emergency power generator. This ensures that business continuity is fully safeguarded even in the event of a prolonged power outage.

Our approach

Before proposing a solution, we visited the site in Spain to conduct an on-site analysis. Together with Dani and Elisabeth Bosch, we inspected the existing installation, discussed the operational processes and assessed the company’s energy requirements. We provided detailed technical guidance on the correct system configuration, including the role of storage capacity, charging speed and peak load absorption. We also discussed practical matters such as  zero-export operation (no feed-in to the grid) and applying peak shaving with a maximum contracted capacity of 85 kW.

By communicating transparently about our choices, the expected return and the future-proofing of the solution, we  established trust and clarity at every stage.

The technical solution

The solution consists of a 10-foot containerised system with a storage capacity of 496 kWh and a power output of 200 kW. This container is equipped with an Energy Management System (EMS) from Envitron that monitors and controls the energy supply on site.

Thanks to this system, the system now enables intelligent communication between the container, the existing solar panel system, the generator and the the on-site energy loads. In this way, we ensure that the solar power is used optimally, that no grid penalties are incurred due to excess feed-in, and that the operational reliability of production and refrigerated storage is fully  safeguarded.

In the event of a prolonged power outage, the system can also run completely off-grid and even automatically control the generator,  ensuring uninterrupted and reliable operations under all circumstances.

Since commissioning, the change has been immediately noticeable:

  • Stable voltage, even with varying sun intensity
  • Reliable operation of machines and cooling installations
  • Fewer malfunctions and lower maintenance costs
  • Greater peace of mind and enhanced operational continuity
