Marker Wadden – Battery makes island completely self-sufficient

The Marker Wadden, an off-grid nature reserve, became fully self-sufficient with a sustainable energy solution from Modular Battery Systems. Solar power, intelligent battery storage, and smart energy management now keep the island running cleanly, independently, and cost-efficiently. This project showcases how cutting-edge technology can support and enhance nature conservation.

The challenge

The Marker Wadden is a pioneering nature project and protected nature reserve in the Marker Meer, developed by Natuurmonumenten in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat. This unique group of islands, constructed using silt from the Marker Meer, was designed to improve water quality, stimulate biodiversity and create a refuge for birds, fish and other animals.

Because of its remote location, providing energy to the island was a major challenge. Without a grid connection, fossil fuel generators were the only fallback—bringing noise, emissions, high maintenance costs, and inefficient energy use. For a project dedicated to restoring nature, this was simply not the right fit. A cleaner, more sustainable alternative was needed.

"The new battery storage system marks a crucial step in our mission to make the Marker Wadden fully sustainable and self-sufficient. It shows that technological innovation and nature conservation can truly reinforce one another. "

Solution

In collaboration with various partners, Modular Battery Systems delivered a customised battery solution that provides Marker Wadden with a complete supply of sustainable energy. The system consists of:

  • Solar panels: The island uses an extensive solar panel field to generate energy during the day.
  • Advanced battery storage: The solar energy generated is stored in a modular battery system. This ensures that sufficient energy is available even on cloudy days and at night.
  • Smart energy management technology: The system regulates the energy supply and prevents waste, maximising efficiency.

The design is tailored to the unique conditions of the Marker Wadden, such as limited space and resistance to extreme weather conditions.

Result

The introduction of the battery storage system has revolutionised the way Marker Wadden manages its energy. Some notable results are:

  • Complete self-sufficiency: The island now functions completely independently of external energy sources.
  • Sustainability: CO2 emissions have been reduced to almost zero, which is perfectly in line with Marker Wadden’s mission to protect nature.
  • Reliable energy supply: Thanks to the battery storage, energy is continuously available, regardless of the weather.
  • Cost efficiency: The system requires significantly less maintenance than the generators previously used and reduces operating costs.

In addition, this project reinforces Marker Wadden’s image as a pioneer in sustainable nature development and serves as inspiration for similar projects worldwide.
